Q: Selling Products Unwrapped
Why are many of your products sold unwrapped?
A:
The Soap Cauldron offers many of its products unwrapped in boxes with a back card only. Much packaging can be saved this way. Purchasing a chunk of our soap sliced fresh from the block, will require a small piece of wrapping paper, this of course is much more beneficial than having to tear away many layers of packaging.
Q: Recyclable Packaging
So is your packaging recyclable?
A:
You will find that our main packaging items are cardboard, Glass & PET plastic bottles. These are all recyclable.
Q: Suppliers
Are your suppliers local?
A:
Wherever possible we choose to use local suppliers that are close to us. We wont however compromise the quality of the ingredients that we use. We are proud to say that all our ingredients are sourced in the UK.
Q: Storing Of Our Products
How do you store your items?
A:
Due to the handmade quality of making our batches to order we do not require products to hang around in storage for long. This also indicates that we don't waste materials unnecessarily.
Q: In House Printing
What about your printing demands?
A:
The Soap cauldron chooses to print all of it's own labels as of when they are needed. This alone minimises wastage. We do not use company's that require you to print tens of thousands of labels that sit around, then when labelling requirements change, These would all have to be scrapped. We don't print catalogue's & save much wastage here. Basically by doing our own printing as of when required our waste is significantly reduced & this leaves us ready to react to any changes immediately.
Q: Ingredients We Use
Are your products safe?
A:
We work very hard to source the finest suppliers for our products. All the ingredients used are vegetable based, none are derived from animals. Our suppliers have over 30 yrs experience with cosmetic formulations & ingredients, this gives our team the knowledge to know what ingredients are safe for use. Because we refuse to have anything to do with animal testing we are restricted to the amount of ingredients that we know are indeed safe to use. Safety is based on years & knowledge in safe use & we also carry out test patches on our own human volunteers. Due to this you wont find us using ingredients that have just been released onto the market as they don't have the proven track record that we aim for.many ingredients have been deemed safe from extensive tests on animals but again we do not support this.
Q: Publicity
Can I research further?
A:
We have noticed over the years that some ingredients have indeed received some unwarranted adverse publicity, these are usually located on websites of people, who offer their "Safer" ingredients/products to the public. The sites are in fact preying on peoples basal fears in order to achieve greater sales, this in our opinion is not a positive marketing technique, most have also even replaced the tried & tested ingredients for other ingredients that have little or no history of safe use, to which is exceptionally risky. Please read on to learn more & follow our links to research further.
Q: Sodium Laureth Sulphate
Isn't this dangerous?
A:
No it is not. We use Sodium Laureth Sulphate (SLES) because this actually has by far the best safety record. This has been in use for many decades, some of our crafters have been using it since 1976, in millions of bottles of shampoo, shower gels, & not forgetting the bubble bath without one single complaint.
SLES has been the subject of a mud slinging campaign to which was spread through the internet & alternative health outlets. It was extremely difficult to trace it's source but it was finally tracked back to a manufacturer of a rival surfactant to which shamelessly exploited peoples good intentions to sell more of it's 'Safe' ingredient.

Q: Shelf Life
Because your products are natural, do you use preservatives? Also what shelf life does this give your products?
A:
Preservatives are an essential part of many cosmetic products for safety reasons, especially in products like ours that are packed with fresh plant extracts. Fresh food would not last to long in your kitchen, This is the same for the fresh ingredients in our products, unless of course we preserve them.
Without preservatives, certain cosmetic products can become overloaded with bacteria, mould and fungus, which can be very dangerous to the skin or eyes. Not all products need to be preserved however, and with 40% of our products preservative free, we don't use preservatives unless we have to.We use a mixture of Parabens to preserve our products. This is by far the most common method of preserving cosmetics, with Parabens being the second most used ingredient behind water. We use these ingredients, again because they have the best track record for safety. Not only do they do a very good job at protecting from a broad microbial spectrum, they have a very low risk of irritation and have good stability. It is interesting to note that Parabens have a natural origin - Parabens are formed from an acid (p-hydroxy-benzoic acid) found in raspberries and blackberries (Source: Cosmetics & Toiletries, January 2005, page 22).
Like other widely used ingredients, there have been some scare stories associated with this ingredient. A study in 2004 found traces of Parabens in breast cancer cells of 20 samples. However, the study left several questions unanswered. For example, the study did not show that Parabens cause cancer, or that they are harmful in any way and the study did not look at possible Paraben levels in normal tissue.
The Cosmetics Ingredients Review (CIR) reviewed the safety of methylparaben, propylparaben, and butylparaben in 1984 and concluded they were safe for use in cosmetic products at levels up to 25%. We use these preservatives at 0.2%. The CIR reviewed the safety of these ingredients again in December 2005 and found no reason to change its original conclusion about the safety of Parabens in cosmetics products. Our products will shelf life approx 6 months. At the moment, we have no reason to not use Parabens as our method of preserving our products.
